The seemingly simple process of iron ore beneficiation is, in fact, a progressive one. Beneficiation techniques in the market are generally divided into two categories: gravity separation and flotation.

Gravity separation methods are commonly used for the beneficiation of coarse and medium-grained iron ores. These technologies rely on the differences in density between valuable minerals and gangue materials. Jigging machines, shaking tables, and spiral chutes are commonly used for gravity separation. They effectively separate heavy minerals, facilitating the concentration and recovery of iron ore particles.

Flotation is a widely used technique in the beneficiation of iron ores, particularly suitable for fine-grained ores. This process relies on the chemical and physical properties of the ore, involving the selective attachment of air bubbles to valuable minerals. Flotation cells, collectors, and frothers are used to separate and concentrate the desired minerals while suppressing unwanted gangue materials. To enhance flotation efficiency, beneficiation plants should select suitable reagent regimes, dosage methods, and flotation systems.

Crushing and screening: To separate the fine ore from the bigger rocks and waste, the mined iron ore is first crushed into small pieces.

Grinding and classification: Using grinding mills, the crushed ore is then processed into a fine powder. Then, based on the particle size distribution, this powdered ore is divided into different sizes.

The larger iron ore particles are separated from the lighter gangue minerals using gravity separation processes. Shaking tables, centrifugal separators, and spiral concentrators are common pieces of gravity separation machinery.

Utilizing magnetic separation, contaminants and magnetic materials are taken out of the iron ore concentrate. In this step, magnetic separators like drum magnets and high-intensity magnetic separators are used.

Flotation: When silica and other impurities are present in substantial amounts in iron ore, flotation is used to selectively remove them from the iron ore concentrate. For this, froth flotation is frequently employed.

Dewatering: After beneficiation, the iron ore concentrate could still have some moisture in it. To lower the moisture level and get the concentrate ready for shipping, dewatering procedures including filtering and drying are performed.

Storage and Delivery: Before being sent to steel mills or other clients for additional processing, the finished iron ore concentrate is kept in bins or stockpiles.

Ball mill
